Clinics at Thornley House

GP clinics

The doctors do clinics in the morning and in the afternoon. The clinics are generally divided into routine clinics with one doctor doing an “urgent clinic” for things that need to be seen the same day. The routine doctors will also see some urgent patients too. Presently you can only book ROUTINE appointments with a doctor of your choice on line. For all other appointment you will need to contact the receptionist.

The URGENT appointments are for patients who cannot wait because there condition is likely to worsen if they have to wait more than a week. We encourage patients as much as possible to save urgent appointments for those that really need them and for patients to schedule appointments in advance at a time of their convenience rather than waiting until the last minute and then putting unnecessary pressure on the system.

If you are not sure if something is urgent or not then you may wish to see Practice Services for advice or www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk.

Nurse clinics

Our nurses are trained to deal with all common long term conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, ischaemic heart disease and diabetes. In addition they can also do some medication reviews as well as immunisation clinics. If you are not sure who you need to see then ask the receptionists who can point you in the right direction. In addition we now have a triage nurse who works sometimes and can also help to point you in the right direction.

Healthcare Assistant Clinic

Jean and Sue are our healthcare assistants. They are trained to do blood tests on adults as well as check blood pressures, height and weight.

Warfarin clinic

Some patients may be started on “warfarin” which needs regular blood test monitoring. We now have a clinic in the surgery for patients to get their blood tests checked instead of having to go to the hospital. Patients must come to the surgery for the blood tests. Patients must initially book in with Dr Ahmed before they can be seen in the warfarin clinic.

Midwife clinic
We have a midwife clinic for patients that have agreed to have shared care between the hospital and the practice. To access this service once you have found out you are pregnant, you simply need to speak to the receptionist. You do not have to book in with the doctor / nurse first.

Counsellor

We have counsellors in the practice who can give advice on issues such as stress, personal relationship problems, bereavement etc. To access these services you need to book in with the doctor.

Gateway Workers

Our Gateway workers are trained in mental health problems but are based in the surgery and can help with “talking therapies” as well as pointing you to other services that may also be in the community. The doctor will need to see you in order to refer you to them. It helps the doctor greatly if you can fill out a PHQ-9 questionnaire prior to your appointment with the doctor. This is available via the Depression Care page under Patient Services.

Alcohol misuse service

We have an alcohol misuse service based in Haughton Vale surgery which has alcohol counsellors as well as GPs attached. You will need to see the doctor to be referred to the service

Drug Misuse service

We have a drug misuse service based in Thornley House which is run by the drug misuse workers as well as the GPs. You can self-register for the service by contacting the Community Drugs and Treatment service on . They will need to first assess your needs and then direct you to the right service either at Lee st in Ashton or perhaps to our clinic if deemed appropriate.
