The Civic Mayor of Tameside visits Thornley House Medical Centres

, Councillor John B. Sullivan JP, GNSM, LTCL visited Haughton Thornley Medical Centres, Thornley Street Hyde on Monday 17th May.
After looking round the surgery, he was formerly welcomed to the meeting by Dr Hannan and Bill Burgoine, Chair of the Patient Participant Group (PPG). After a brief introduction on the work of the PPG by Bill, Dr Amir Hannan presented a short slide presentation "Real-time Digital Medicine" (see below). This gave a great incite as to what is happening witin the Practice where patients can safely choose to access their GP electronic health record on-line from anywhere in the world. Over 800 patients at the practice are now able to access their records in this way and more people are asking all the time. A number of practices around the country are now offering the service and the numbers are set to rise further as more people hear about it.
Record Access is only part of the Practice. A well informed practice-based web portal www.htmc.co.uk encourages patients to take care of their health and provides information and a variety of useful, reliable, trustworthy links. The site is available and "open all hours 24 hours a day, 7 days a week".

with the Practice. On World Cancer Research Fund "Fruity Friday
", a PPG member handed out bananas to patients attending surgery that day. Along with the bananas, patients also received an information leaflet on how to eat "5-a-day
" fruit.
The Practice works very closely with its partner organisations including social services, the voluntary sector as well as the local council. An example of close working is the Library Course that was set up at Hyde Library for patients who are complete beginners to learn how to use a computer and a mouse, how to go on the internet and access their records and go to trustworthy websites to learn more about their health and even monitor themselves using HealthSpace

The meeting was attended by patients, doctors and members of the community. Mr Abudulmalik Ali from Hyde Pharmacy also attended.
After talking with Doctors and Patients, the Mayor thanked everyone for their attendance and was amazed at the amount of information available to patients at the practice.
