Enhanced Recovery Programme in Orthopaedics at Tameside Hospital Foundation Trust by Mr Thalava and Dawn Fletcher. The talk explains a new series of techniques that have led to an early indication of dramatic improvements in outcomes for patients requiring hip and knee replacement so that patients can go home much earlier after surgery. This has been an excellent example of real teamwork amongst a variety of different clinicians from different specialties coming together. The programme has now extended to some types of colorectal surgery (including some cancers) as well as gynaecological surgery. But for it to be successful, it also needs a MOTIVATED patient. The talk includes videos of patients walking after surgery and what the programme has meant for them as well as quotes from various members of the team.
What is Self Care ? A talk by Dr Amir Hannan, a full-time General Practitioner at Haughton Thornley Medical Centres but also a Self Care Champion too for the Self Care Forum. This is an interactive talk with lots of audience participation to try to understand what self care means for you, how you can do more for yourself but also what help is available to help you do more including the practice website www.htmc.co.uk, to help you navigate through the complex health care system we have and also how access to your GP electronic health records can help you understadn your own health better and what is happening to you. He introduces the idea of the "Family Health Manager" and how they are leading the way and could help to activate the rest of the family so that everybody benefits too!
