Haughton Thornley Medical Centres has prided itself in promoting Self Care Week for the last few years working in close conjunction with its Patient Participation Group (PPG) at Thornley House and at Haughton Vale surgery. In previous years, we have put talks on at the surgery which you can view from 2010, 2011 and 2012.
This year the PPG decided to step outside the surgery and meet the public at Clarendon Shopping Centre in Hyde. Ingrid Brindle, chair of Thornley House PPG, introduces below what today was all about
Members of the public had an opportunity to meet with the PPG and share some ideas around improving their lifestyle, improving their diet, increasing exercise, know your pulse, learn more about gluten-free diets and other things patients and carers can do to help themselves. Dr Hannan and Dr Gutteridge were also on hand for part of the day to support the PPG and also to enhance any advice that was given as well as informing them about what else they could do too.
Here is the stand that members of the public could come along and see, pick up leaflets from and take with them.
Donald Hunter, ex-Chair of Thornley House PPG was on hand sculpturing an elephant and its baby and showing how he had taught himself to do this. Keeping your mind busy and active is a great way of staying healthy!
This lady describes how she suffers with a number of health conditions and didn't feel like getting up to go shopping but happened to stumble upon the PPG and it had brought a smile to her face. She thought it was wonderful that there was a group out there willing to give up their own time to help people like her!
This gentleman came from Stockport and met Marilyn. He thinks it is a good idea and describes how people appreciate it. People can see you standing there and think you are trying to sell something. (It's called health!)
Marilyn describes to a passer-by some natural remedies that have been passed on between the generations to her for common symptoms for minor illnesses that you can try which can help you too.
And the prize for the most charitable person on the day? Well that must go to the two ladies who came along and put £3 on his table. Find out why by watching the video below. We didn't get a chance to find out who they were but would like to extend our thanks to them for their kindness. None of us were expecting that when we set out to do this!
